2. Norlin Quadrangle

Just south of Old Main is a large, grassy field surrounded by buildings. The Norlin Quadrangle is a national historic district, the home of CU’s first three buildings, and the heart of campus. It is named for George Norlin, classics professor and CU president from 1917 to 1939. Some of the best examples of campus architecture are located around the quad: Norlin Library, McKenna, and Hellems. The most recent addition to the quad is the Eaton Humanities building, with 16 classrooms and three lecture halls using the latest instructional technology. The restored Macky Auditorium is a campus and community favorite.

The centerpiece of the quad is Norlin Library. As the home of University Libraries, it is located at the center of the campus. With the largest library collection in the Rocky Mountain region, Norlin Library houses more than 11 million books, periodicals, government publications, microforms, audiovisual materials, maps, manuscripts, papers, artifacts, computer-based resources, extensive special collections of archival materials, and rare manuscripts dating to the 15th century. Norlin Commons, a newly renovated area inside the library that provides collaborative and individual work spaces, technology assistance, theWriting Center, and a coffee shop, is open 24 hours a day when classes are in session.

“Enter here the timeless fellowship of the human spirit.”

George Norlin’s inscription above the west entrance to the Norlin Library serves as inspiration and motivation for CU-Boulder’s 30,000 students. During his tenure as president, he raised CU to rank among the best “medium-sized” institutions of higher education in the nation.
